Hello. I'm Nitaawegiizhigok — Singing Sky Woman
I've lived many stories so far: opera singer, music theatre performer, actor, writer, life coach for creatives, mentor to emerging artists, CBC host and radio documentary maker, podcast creator and host, and Director of Engagement and New Work at Pacific Opera Victoria. I'm Métis, and that runs through everything I make and how I show up in the world.
New stories are taking shape too. I'm composing for solo voice and vocal choir, exploring what it means to sing the land — and I love walking alongside other singers as they find their own connection to place and ancestry. My performance work lives in immersive theatre: breaking the fourth wall, inviting you into the circle of story and song, where everyone has a part to play. My latest show, The Song Blanket, is the newest expression of that. As a Creative Living coach, I work with artists and makers of all kinds, helping them find balance and bring their whole selves — not just the "artist" part — to their creative path.

My name was a gift. Anishinaabe Elder and dear brother Rene Meshake visioned it for me — Nitaawegiizhigok. He told me to think of Nitaawe as a child learning to talk, learning to be skilled in singing. This name, he said, holds what I've done, where I'm going, and how I'll face adversity and rise. The stories are still being written.
